Prologue - Part 1

"K, I'm gonna go. I'm totally beat."

"Oki, wanna barbeque later? Should be nice out."

"Sounds good, my place?"

"Yeah, we'll pick up the food and be over around 7-ish."

"Alright, see you guys then."

"Bye hon."

"Bye."

I hugged my best friend Iren goodbye and walked out of her front door. As soon as I heard the door click shut behind me I leaned against the porch railing to rest a second. I had been getting this piercing migraine above my right temple off and on for weeks, and I couldn't seem to shake it. The only thing I wanted to do right now was take a shower and have a nap.

I sighed and walked down the steps and across her lawn to mine. The heat we were having the last few weeks was just sucking the energy out of me. Daytime had never been my favorite part of the day, but more so during summer when the bright sun sent out such a 'get up and go' vibe. I, being as lazy and unambitious as I admittedly am, despise that stupid vibe. I drag my feet at the thought of chores or paying bills, or dealing with.. anything adults are forced to deal with really. So for me, the night time was always more lovely.

Looking down as I made my way towards the house I noticed the grass looked shorter. Someone had cut it I guess, and when I breathed in deep I could smell it. Fresh cut grass is such a nice smell, don't you think? Right up there with new car and newborn baby. Before I got to the porch steps I could see some rougue grass tops on the pathway. They looked like little green soldiers laid slain in the battlefield.

I unlocked the front door and went inside. The house was cool and quiet. As I was shutting the door I turned around and called out, "Anyone home?". I listened for a moment, still quiet. I guess not.

Upstairs I was just about to get some clothes ready for after my shower when I heard the back door bang shut, followed by someone jogging up the stairs.

"Babe, you up here?"

"In here!" I called out.

My bedroom door opened and Donovan walked in, with that mischievous and kinda goofy grin of his on his face.

"There you are." He said as he walked towards me, still smiling. He grabbed me by my waist and pulled me to him. He smelled like a combination of gasoline, dirt, and the faintest hint of soap. Typical Donovan smell.

"Were you outside?" I asked, wrapping the soft tips of his hair between my fingers. "I didn't think anyone was here."

"Oh, I was in the back tinkering with the lawn mower. I used it this morning and man, that thing is pathetic. So I went to the hardware store and bought some parts to supe it up a bit. How was shopping?"

"It was ok I guess. I didn't find anything I wanted, despite Iren and Isabella taking home half the mall. You know how those girls are..  like a force of nature when it comes to clothes." I said, shaking my head and letting a little smile form at the thought of those two. "Then my stupid migraine came back, so I think I'm just a little worn out. I was going to hop in the shower."

"Yeah, you do look a little beat."

"Hey!"

"Ha!" he said, putting his arms up and feigning a defensive stance. "You know I don't mean it like that! Come on, grab your towel. I'll run you a bubble bath instead."

"So where are the guys?" I asked, rubbing my neck trying to get the kinks out.

"Ambrose said something about buying a new guitar in Riverview. But he left right after you guys did so he should be back soon. And Spooke went into the lab to check on that experiment he's working on, but said he would be back before dinner. Lavender or Rose Petal?" Donovan asked, nodding at the little corner of the tub where I keep my bubbles and salts while he let the water run over his hand so he could check the temperature.

"Mmmm, Lavender please." Maybe it would help relax me. "Oh, I almost forgot - the girls are coming over to barbeque later. They'll pick up the food but can you call one of the guys and tell them to pick up drinks on their way home? I think we're low."

"I'll go." he said, standing up from his crouch near the tub and drying his hands on the front of his Inventor's apron. "I wanted to run back to the hardware store and pick something up anyways. Maybe I can work on the mower a little more before they get here."

"Ok." I smiled at Donovan. "I'm going to take a nap after this, can you wake me up if I'm still sleeping when they get here?"

"Sure thing, babe." He winked at me and closed the door behind him.

I dropped my towel and stuck my big toe into the bubbles to test the temperature. It was just right. I like my baths and showers on the verge of scalding, it really releases tension. I slid in and got my ritual scrubbing over with, then leaned my head against the cool stone wall and closed my eyes. My migraine was already fading away. I think the combination of Donovan and a hot lavender bubble bath was doing trick.

I spent at least, I dunno, 30 mins laying in the tub. Finally when the water started to get cold and I was all wrinkly as a dried plum I talked myself into getting out. Baths always put me into a sort of lull so when I finally made it to my room, instead of getting dressed I stuck to my original plan and plopped down on my bed for a nap. I was out before my head hit the pillow.

"Luciiii."

"Luci-Goosey wake uuuup."

I was out like a light until that little sing-song voice interrupted my dreams.

"Luci, wake up!"

"Hey, pssst!"

"Lucinda, don't try to fake it. I know you can hear me." said Isabella, in this ok-I'm-getting-bored-now tone that she often uses.

"Huh?"

"Get up already, sleepyhead. Everyone is downstairs."

"Alright, alright. I'm up."

"What are you doing sleeping right now? Are you sick?"

"Nah, I'm ok actually. I had one of my headaches earlier, but its gone now."

She hung out and channel surfed while I got dressed. We chatted a little, but since I had just been with her earlier in the day it wasn't anything exciting or important other than that Iren couldn't make it. She had been called into the hospital to cover some sick nurse's shift, which was a little disappointing since I loved to have everyone there with me.

"Oh my god, seriously. You've got to be kidding!"

"Those are totally fake!" Kellie said, shaking her hand at the tv as if it would somehow make Spooke see the light.

"You think? Nah.. they look real to me. Did you see how they -"

"Um, yeah!" Isabella interrupted him. "Ya know, for such a genius you sure don't know squat about what fakies look like." she giggled and exchanged looks with me and Kellie.

I just shrugged my shoulders and we all started laughing. Spooke is a genius, but more in the Dr. Frankenstein type of way versus just common sense know-all. I remember when I first met him he could spend hours in that shady lab of his, concocting some formula or device with ease, but when it came to matters of the heart and body he had very little idea about anything. (Not that I was all super experienced or anything.)

This came to a huge surprise to me of course, because you assume the opposite looking at him. He has a thuggish presence with his bald head and shocking green eyes. The fact that he is covered in tattoos and piercings doesn't exactly paint a halo over his head, either. His personality matches and is very in your face and aggressive, and that isn't just some act. I've seen him put his money where his mouth is many, many times and as appalling as this sounds that is what I adore about him. Because despite how cruel he is to whoever ticks him off (and they usually have it coming, anyway) he is always as gentle as a lamb with me. He's very chivalrous which is such an important quality to me, and I always feel safe when I am with him. So getting back on topic - yeah, he looked like he had be there, done that and came back to do it all again. Maybe all the time spent evil scheming had left him very little in the ways of a social life, and therefore (by default) a love life? I wasn't really sure and had never asked, since that wasn't the case anymore.

Donovan is similiar, in a way. He is also very, very smart. But where Spooke is evil, Donovan is eccentric - so all of his inventive dabblings are that of a more Macgyver nature. He's always tinkering with things and building odd little contraptions, and if something around the house needs fixing, Donovan is the one to fix it.

Unlike Spooke, he doesn't have a mean bone is his body so has no ambition of taking over the world or anything sordid like that. He has a very goofy (almost crazy) personality, and I think prefers spending time in small groups, which gets a bit wierd sometimes because we have such a huge group of close friends. But, he's very caring and fun, and I thoroughly enjoy just hanging out with him. I think he is more sensitive to what people need, because he is always attentive and loving when I need it. He's downright wierd sometimes and combined with how brilliant his mind is, he is just a trip to be around. He is very handsome, but in a boyish, innocent way. Like Spooke, he had almost no romantic experience before me. I think he spent most of his time puttering around with his inventions and knicknacks, or locking himself in a room with all his books. Either way, he didn't get out much.

Ambrose is on the other side of the spectrum of those two. Plain and simple, Ambrose is gorgeous, he knows it, and he acts accordingly. He isn't smug, but he is definitely confident. I can't think of a way to describe his looks other than to call them devilish, and he has these ice blue eyes that give me the chills everytime I look into them. Topping off his overtly good looks is the fact that he's talented. He may not have smarts like Donovan and Spooke, but I doubt anyone is thinking about his brains when they hear him strum a guitar, and I think its only a matter of time before he gets famous. He's very smooth and charismatic and people are drawn to him like flies to honey, especially the women. We have a 'don't ask, don't tell' policy regarding his past, because frankly, I don't even want to know. He is most certainly experienced in that department, I am sure of that much.

Now, I know I am making him sound like some big player, and I do think this is the impression people get from him, but trust me when I say he isn't. He's a big romantic softy when it comes down to it and I think he was just having fun until he found what he was looking for. I don't presume to think I am his key to eternal happiness or anything like that, but since he has been with me I haven't seen anything but devotion. And surprisingly out of all three of the guys, he is the one that bugs me about getting married. The only downside to Ambrose is that he is a little on the serious side, so not as easy to have fun with. And like Spooke, there has always been something a bit devious about him. But I haven't been able to put my finger on it yet.

"Anyone want ice cream? Dono picked some up earlier." I asked once we all got our giggles out.

"I do!"

"Me!"

"Me please!"

"Kay."

"So anyways, I was thinking we could all go see that new From Dawn 'til Dusk movie tomorrow night? Alex got comped a bunch of tickets from the theatre that we can use." said Isabella.

"Oh yeah, I want to see that! I read the reviews yesterday and supposedly its really good. I love any movie Simtin Taratino has his hand in, they are always so twisted." said Donovan, nodding.

"Oh my gosh, I sooo want to see that movie. I just love Alma Kayek, shes soooo gorgeous." gushed Amara as she sat down.

"I know, right? And can you imagine being that famous? I want to be an actress just like her someday. I can see it now - my name up in the billboards, paparrazzi falling over each other to photograph me, people lining up to get my autograph.." Kellie said, waving her arms at her imaginary billboard.

"Ah, that must be the life!" she sighed, her and Amara with a daydreamy looks in their eyes.

"Sounds kinda annoying, to be honest." said Isabella.

"Oh, Bella. That's just because you're not exactly a people person." said Kellie, an affectionate grin on her face.

Isabella scoffed. "Well duh. And thats because most people are annoy-"

*thump*

"Luci??"

"What was that?"

"Oh my god, what happened?!"

"Luci??"

"Did she fall?!"

"What happened?!"

"I don't know! I didn't see! Hurry up, call an ambulance!"
